About Traco Medical
Founded in 1986 by Ken Smith, Traco Medical helps healthcare facilities source dependable refurbished hospital beds, stretchers, birthing beds, and replacement parts from Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
For nearly four decades, Traco has focused on a practical problem: keeping good medical equipment in service when parts, support, or replacement options are hard to find.
Traco Medical was born from a need for discontinued medical bed and stretcher parts. Founder Ken Smith was raised on a hog farm in rural southwestern Minnesota, a place where you learned to fix things yourself, solve problems directly, and stand behind your word.
In the mid-1980s, while working in Sioux Falls, Ken saw a growing problem inside hospitals and care facilities: dependable medical beds and stretchers were being sidelined simply because manufacturers no longer produced the parts needed to repair them.
Ken began refurbishing beds in his garage. What started as a local operation grew into a company built around solving the “parts gap” for older and discontinued hospital beds, stretchers, birthing beds, and related equipment.
Today, Traco Medical supports healthcare facilities across all 50 states and more than 15 countries while staying rooted in the same practical values it started with: real service, real relationships, and doing the job right.
The difference is simple: when a facility calls Traco, a real person helps solve the problem.
Hospital beds, stretchers, birthing beds, and related equipment prepared for continued clinical use.
A practical solution for facilities trying to keep dependable equipment in service after OEM support has ended.
Real people helping facilities confirm availability, compatibility, condition, and the right path forward.
Traco has supported university nursing and allied health programs with fleet-scale equipment needs, including South Texas College.
Traco Medical supports the Children’s Home Society of South Dakota.
Traco provides national technical support and availability for critical hospital equipment needs.

Cole brings a dual-lens approach to Traco’s leadership. After earning a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Kansas in 2004 and a Juris Doctor from Creighton University School of Law in 2008, Cole bridges the gap between complex clinical needs and reliable, cost-effective equipment strategy.
A 2009 graduate of the University of Kansas, Cade manages the logistics behind Traco’s refurbishment, shipping, and customer support standards. A certified student pilot since August 16, 2016, Cade brings a checklist-driven approach to operations, safety, and precision across Traco’s national and international work.
The Smith family’s ties to the medical community reinforce how much dependable equipment matters. Cade’s wife, Dr. Taylor Hansen, works in neonatology.
